Black, red, teal, and violet move through the surface like distant color inside a nebula.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"isSelectedEnd\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAcross that darkness, irregular shapes of 24-karat gold appear one by one. They begin small and separate, then grow larger and more numerous as they follow the curve of the sculpture. What starts as a scattering gradually becomes a current.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"isSelectedEnd\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe work takes its title from the words closely associated with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” The expanding gold forms reflect the way individual acts of courage, kindness, and understanding can gather momentum. Change may begin quietly, but it does not have to remain small.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"isSelectedEnd\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe American alligator leather was dyed by hand, allowing its natural scale pattern to remain visible beneath the layered color. I painted the natural scale texture with layers of acrylic and luminous pigment, then wet-molded each piece into a shallow curve before gilding its edges and affixing it to the canvas. The forms might be thoughts, moments, or fragments of memories. Fluorescent pinks, oranges, and yellow-oranges radiate across the surface, layered with pearlescent pink and gold pigment that catches the light as you move through the room. From a distance it reads like warm waves, sparkling and serene. The pearlescent pigments shift subtly with the light, and the color is even more alive in person.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUp close, the carp leather reveals its own architecture, recessed scale pockets filled with vibrant sky blue, like the inside of a breaking wave. Carp were introduced into the Mississippi River system in the 1970s and have been quietly overwhelming native waterways ever since.
