Last Night I Dreamt of Transformation takes the form of a midnight-blue serpent curling through space. Its body follows a long, fluid S, dark and quietly luminous, while tiny points of fiber-optic light flicker across its scales like stars appearing in a night sky.

Then, unexpectedly, the serpent begins to bloom.

Hand-cut leather flowers and leaves grow across its body in pink, blue, yellow, purple, and green. Peonies, forget-me-nots, marigolds, and tulips turn the python’s powerful form into a strange, dreamlike garden. The contrast is deliberate: danger and tenderness, darkness and color, destruction and new growth held within the same object.

The sculpture is made from the hide of an invasive Burmese python removed from the Florida Everglades. Pythons have severely reduced populations of native mammals and other wildlife in parts of the Everglades, but their patterned skins can also become an extraordinary artistic material. Here, the python’s natural scales remain visible beneath layers of dye and acrylic, catching the light between the flowers.

The work imagines transformation as something more complex than erasure. The serpent does not disappear or become harmless. Instead, the evidence of what it was remains present while something vivid begins to grow from it.
