No. 1 of 3 in the Migration series
A flock rises over deep green water reflecting a bright afternoon sky, each bird physically lifted from the surface of the painting.
Migration began without a plan. While working with the carp leather, I pulled up several scale pockets at random. Their irregular edges suddenly looked like birds, so I followed what the material had revealed, allowing each pocket to determine the shape and movement of the flock.
The raised birds stand proud of the surface, their painted shadows creating the illusion of flight over luminous water.
At 16 × 22 inches, Migration is an intimate artwork with remarkable physical presence. From a distance, it feels serene and expansive. Up close, the dimensional birds, natural seams, and intricate texture of the leather slowly reveal themselves.
